Mandala Garden aka Zhongkai Sheshan Villas
Shanghai, China

Walls are one of the most significant elements in Chinese architecture. In this scheme, various divisions and connections make rich and variable spaces; Openings, such as doors and windows, allow vision to penetrate through different spaces, creating a deep, remote and unlimited spatial illusion - all in order to obtain the profoundness of the environment.

A designed route guides people to view various areas of the villa. The central bamboo garden is a connecting pivot for the other rooms and gardens in organization of spaces. It is the focal point of the whole villa.

The garden and the interior space associated to it are perceived as an integral whole. Broad roof overhangs and extended stone walls connect inside and outside to diminish the boundary. The harmony to nature, creating simple, stylish and peaceful spaces is the key principle of this scheme.
