Zhongkai Sheshan Villa E4
"Villa of Hidden Gem"
Mandala Garden aka Zhongkai Sheshan Villas
Shanghai, China
The site is long and narrow and bound by other sites on two sides. This creates a dominant axis in the north-south direction. In response to this, the villa design plays on a series of "focal points" juxtaposed along the north-south axis. The villa is conceptually a hidden gem which unfolds itself as one moves through the spaces. The sequence of focal points creates a progression of rich and varied spatial experiences, as well as a contrast of expansive and deliberate views as in classic Chinese house and garden designs.
